Even neighbours sometimes engage in feuds that end in death. But murder also breaks the rules of what we expect: parents kill their children, children kill their parents spouses vow to love and cherish ’till death do us part,’ until murder suddenly and inexplicably becomes an alternative to divorce. If you stop and think about it, murder is an instance in which rules are broken I’m not just talking about laws because that’s obvious. Those two opening lines from Irish author, Tana French’s fourth novel, Broken Harbortell us a lot about Dublin Murder squad detective, 42-year-old Mick Kennedy: 1) he cares deeply about his job 2) he’s an engaging narrator, and 3) this is a man who places a great deal of importance on the rules. Erdrich has referred to the letters as " beautiful, full of humor and storytelling." She based The Night Watchman on his loving personality and commitment to his tribe. In the letters written by her grandfather detailing his resistance against termination bills meant to assimilate Ojibwe people into broader American society through a variety of means, including the end of federal recognition of the sovereignty of indigenous tribes. ![]() In 2021, the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Night Watchman is the first novel that Erdrich has written that is set on the Turtle Mountain Reservation. ![]() The novel was inspired by the life of Erdrich's grandfather who motivated and inspired other members of the Turtle Mountain Reservation to resist the Indian termination policies of the 1940s-1960s.
